We had a really helpful discussion on this during our study day, thank you Susie for your guidance on this. I've often thought how do I know when God is saying something to me? I noted these down, to share with others and get your views?
Does it fit with scripture?
Does God keep saying the same things?
Does it come from others?
Do other people think it is a good idea?
Have a go at what you are being told - do you enjoy it?
Keep a journal of when you hear God talking to you - how and where?
Does it feel like the right thing to do (gut feel?)
I know now that I hear God most when I am surrounded by his creation all around me - the peace and tranquility I experience when out walking thinking things through and then getting answers - makes sense now!
How do others know when God is talking to them?
Thank you Phillip, very useful & helpful
Hi Phillip, like you I believe God talks to me when I'm surrounded by nature. But sometimes, in a moment of stillness and noticing, being in the moment, not thinking about what's next, or what's just happened, I can feel that God is whispering to me. This can happen anywhere. I also think that God has spoken to me through other people, and not just Christians. A close friend once described it as 'meeting an angel'. I have had lots of random conversations with people that struck a chord, stayed with me and influenced my faith and vocation. Also, have you ever thought ' today's sernom is specifically aimed at me!'? Thank you for reminding us of the 'litmus test' that Susie described. We are called to discern what God wants us to do, and it's not easy. This will certainly help.
